Women in Cyber: Ashley Atunzu

In celebration of Women's History Month, we're spotlighting the incredible women of Cobalt throughout March. Each feature will share their unique cybersecurity journeys, insights, and career lessons they have learned.

How long have you been working in cybersecurity? How did you get started in the field?

Cobalt is my first experience working in cybersecurity, and I’ve been in the field for a little over three months now. It’s been an exciting learning experience, and I’m really enjoying the challenge of diving into this dynamic industry.

What has been the greatest reward of your career? What do you love most about your job?

That’s a tough one as there are so many highly rewarding things. I guess if I had to choose the most rewarding part of my career has been the opportunity to learn, grow, and make a meaningful impact. I take pride in helping the executives I support achieve their goals and contributing to successful outcomes. What I enjoy most about my job is working alongside a great team, tackling new challenges, and finding solutions that keep everything running smoothly. Working at Cobalt has been no different. I am very happy to work alongside many talented individuals who are constantly curious, and hardworking, and love what they do is a joy.

What has been the greatest challenge you faced in your career?

Earlier in my career, learning how to adapt to different executives—their personalities, preferences, and working styles was difficult. Understanding what drives them and how to best support their needs took time and experience. Now, I make it a priority to get to know my executives and their teams within the first week or two of a new role, ensuring I can provide seamless support from the start to partner with them efficiently and effectively.

What is your advice to young female professionals coming into the workforce or into cybersecurity?

Be confident in yourself and your abilities. Do not be afraid to make a mistake. That is how you grow and become better. I have made mistakes in my career and have used those as learning and growth opportunities. Also, adapting to situations and people has helped me throughout my career. You also want to make sure you build a network and have that support system. Always remember that there is no “I” in “Team”.

What’s your biggest inspiration or motivator when you are down?

I love spending time with my family, listening to music that hits the right note for how I’m feeling, and watching something funny or just anything that makes me laugh. They say laughter is good for the soul, so it’s a definitive go-to.

Is there a moment in recent memory, where you felt empowered by female representation?

I don’t have a moment, but I have examples that I can see daily. At Cobalt, our CEO, CHRO, and CMO are all incredible women, and working alongside them is really inspiring. It’s empowering to see women in these key roles and know that diversity and representation are valued.

I’m all about true crime documentaries—they never fail to keep me hooked! I also really enjoy watching restoration videos; there’s something super satisfying about seeing old things get a new life.

Who are your favorite musical artists?

Hmm…some off the top of my head would be Thirty Seconds to Mars, Linkin Park, Kanye West, Drake, Eminem, Rihanna, Nelly Furtado, and the list can go on and on and on.
